Reviewing Bred Gourmet: Some of the best burgers in Boston.
I love a good burger, so Bred Gourmet, a popular burger restaurant in Boston’s Dorchester neighborhood, had been on my food bucket list for a long time. They’re best known for their signature smoked burgers and fried chicken sandwiches. This past month, I finally got to try it myself!
A friend and I visited Bred Gourmet on a Saturday afternoon. The restaurant is on a busy street in Dorchester, so we had to park in a nearby parking lot and walk over.
Once inside, the first thing we noticed was that the restaurant was small but cute. The interior had white-tile walls, three or four marble-topped tables, and a row of bar seating. There were also large windows that let in plenty of natural sunlight. It was loud inside – hip-hop music was playing and the employees were chatting amongst themselves. We came right at lunchtime, so a few other patrons rolled in at the same time we did. Overall, the interior felt trendy, and the atmosphere casual.
Bred Gourmet uses a counter-service style for ordering, so we grabbed a menu upfront to look over. The first section of the menu listed their gourmet burgers. Of course, they had the classic hamburger with lettuce, tomatoes, and onions, but they also had unique flavors I hadn’t seen elsewhere. The Maui burger came with sliced pineapple and sweet plantains, while the Somewhere in Wisconsin burger had pig candy and maple bourbon aioli. Aside from burgers, they had fried chicken sandwiches, fries, salads, and smoothies available. The menu was pricy at about $14-15 dollars per burger. After much deliberation, we decided on the Parisian burger, the Yosemite burger, and a large side of Parmesan Truffle fries.
The food arrived all at once fifteen minutes after ordering. immediately I noticed how thick each burger was and how generous they were with toppings.
I first tried the Parisian burger. It came with applewood smoked bacon, a fried egg, mushrooms, brie, and caramelized onions in a brioche bun. The meat patty itself was cooked medium and was super juicy. The bacon was pleasantly sweet and added a crunchy texture. The mushrooms and onions came covered in a truffle aioli for enhanced flavor. Last, the brioche bun held it together, as it was buttery and pillowy! My only complaint was that the burger quickly became soggy from the caramelized onions, mushrooms, and egg.
I tried the Yosemite Burger next. This burger came with applewood smoked bacon, tomatoes, jalapenos, caramelized onions, and aioli sauce on a brioche bun. The jalapenos added a fantastic crunch and subtle heat. The aioli sauce was creamy and had a strong garlic flavor. I liked this burger even more than the Parisian.
We tried the truffle parmesan fries last. The fries were thick-cut and had a generous layer of flakey salt. I liked that the truffle flavoring wasn’t too overpowering. While the fries were tasty, they were greasy and not very crispy. I didn’t mind but skip this one if you like crispy fries.
Overall, I recommend Bred Gourmet to anyone who wants a good burger in a relaxed atmosphere. The food here is pretty heavy, so go with a big appetite!
