Reviewing Kim’s Teahouse: The iconic – but newly renovated Teahouse in Katy, Texas.
Houston is known for its bubble tea scene, so there is a whole sea of options for authentic and delicious boba. Kim’s Teahouse has a longstanding reputation in Houston — they’ve been around since before the boba tea craze took off. So, I decided to stop by their newly renovated location in Katy, Texas.
Upon walking in, I noticed how cozy it felt. It took me back to the days when I would spend hours in coffee shops with my friends; this place is great for spending time with friends or just studying and working. Two large televisions are on without sound in the background, and various seating types are available, ranging from sofas to bar stools.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t enjoy the store for too long; due to COVID-19 being pretty rampant in Houston at the
moment, I tend not to spend too long in restaurants. Luckily, Kim’s Teahouse does a phenomenal job offering delivery through their several delivery partners as well as fast take-out service for their guests that order to-go.
When it comes to teahouses, you never know what to expect in terms of the choices of tea available or the flavors or additions they offer. When I walked into Kim’s, the first thing I noticed was their massive list of teas displayed across a wall near the entrance. Kim’s really impressed me with their drink selection, which included non-tea options like smoothies and coffee. They also offer “sinkers” that you can add to your drink, such as regular boba, matcha boba, lychee jelly, and many more.
Now, I’m a picky person when it comes to tea. Ironically, as a Southerner, I’m not that into sweet tea. So whenever I order bubble tea, I always ask for low or no sugar and hope that they can customize the drink for me. Some places say they are unable to make this accommodation, while others can adjust the order. And, luckily, it was no problem at all for Kim’s fantastic and friendly employees. I ordered two drinks: a seafoam oolong with no sugar and a Thai green tea with half sugar. Seafoam oolong is my go-to at most places that serve it, but Thai green tea was very new to me.
Both were great and prepared exactly how I ordered them. The seafoam oolong had a great bitter bite that blended well with the seafoam topping. Once mixed, it had a sweeter flavor that wasn’t too sweet for me and maintained the taste of both the tea and the seafoam topping. The Thai green tea retained the beautiful, sweet taste that Thai tea is known for, but with a fresh, new twist that makes it feel a bit lighter than its black tea counterpart. The boba I added to my drink was also well-made, soft, and nicely chewy.
Kim’s Teahouse offers more than just tea. They have a wonderful array of snacks available like squid balls, popcorn chicken, cookies, egg rolls, different types of fries, and more. I ordered a set of two red velvet cookies and some sweet potato fries. You can’t go wrong with those, right?
The cookies were surprisingly soft considering how crunchy I expected them to be, which was a pleasant surprise. Instead, they were very soft and flavorful, with white chocolate chunks in the cookie being a delectable addition.
The sweet potato fries were unlike any other sweet potato fries I’ve ever had, and now all other sweet potato fries will never compare. These were seasoned with Kim’s special seasoning, which tasted almost like a spicy cinnamon coating and was an exceptional complement to the sweetness of the sweet potato.
I can’t wait to return here to try more of their drinks. The best part is that you can mix and match flavors for your own customizations as well as order selections off the menu! There is no limit to the types of drinks you can order at Kim’s Teahouse, and their divine snacks are definitely worth the trip.
