Reviewing Sonoritas Prime Tacos: Sonoran-inspired tacos in Los Angeles.
Los Angeles is known for their tacos due to their authenticity, price, and convenience; however, it is not as easy as it seems to locate tacos with these attributes. Sawtelle might be known for their various popular Asian cuisines, but I found an amazing taco spot on that street. Sonoritas Prime Tacos is hard to miss as there are always a few people in line waiting for a table, and the fresh smell of tacos being made is prevalent. There is both indoor and outdoor seating, and it is a fun spot to meet up with friends, go on a date, or enjoy a meal with family.
I actually discovered this place because it is a good friend of mine’s go-to taco and burrito spot with her other foodie friend. She is Mexican, so I especially trust and value her opinion. Additionally, this restaurant has an online presence for being one of the best Mexican restaurants in Los Angeles because all their dishes are made from scratch — even the corn tortillas — and because some of the photos of their burritos went viral in the realm of food Instagram.
The style of the restaurant is to order and pay ahead and then find a table to later be served. They quickly brought out our drinks and a basket of chips with salsa. The chips were super fresh, warm, and perfectly seasoned with chili powder. The salsa was an adequate level of spice, but I wish they had a green salsa too.
Next, our al pastor tacos came out, and they consisted of marinated pork, spicy pineapple salsa, cilantro, and onions on a corn tortilla. This taco was absolutely delicious from the first bite to the very last; each bite burst with flavor and was better than the previous. Honestly, I should have ordered more of these tacos, but at least now I know for next time!
We split the mar y tierra burrito, which consisted of angus beef, spicy shrimp, guacamole, pico de gallo, cheese, chipotle mayo, rice, and beans. This burrito was loaded with deliciousness and was equally as tasty as the tacos. I really appreciated the amount of guacamole that was in the burrito, as well as the size of the burrito being perfect to share. Not only was the steak perfectly cooked, but it was also seasoned super well. The shrimp to steak ratio was just the right amount to where each bite consisted of one of the proteins (and sometimes even both!).
The staff was friendly and service was pretty fast. The ambiance of the place gives off a hole-in-the-wall vibe, but the quality of the food definitely makes it worth it to dine in. I will most certainly be going back to this spot. In fact, I have been sharing it with all my friends as I feel it is a high competitor for some of the best tacos in Los Angeles.
Next time, I might try the taco sampler, which includes one carne asada, one al pastor, one grilled veggie, and one chicken. The bang for buck on this taco sampler is extremely worth it. Not only is this place phenomenal in terms of flavor and quality of the food, but the price is right and the location is pretty convenient. Speaking of, I suggest you park in the Marshalls parking lot and walk over to Sonoritas to avoid any parking trouble or inconveniences. Overall, I consider Sonoritas Prime Tacos to be one of the top three restaurants in Los Angeles for tacos and burritos.
