Reviewing The Spot: Good American food and good views in Galveston, TX.

Piña Colada, The Spot, Galveston
Piña Colada (The Spot, Galveston)

Just a quick drive down the street from Downtown Houston is Galveston, Texas. Galveston is filled with fantastic local restaurants that cater to tourists and locals alike; it’s very hard to choose which restaurant to visit because you’ll want to visit each one! One that is a bit more on the tourist side but still unique to Galveston is a colorful, busy restaurant called The Spot, which is located on Seawall Boulevard and overlooks the Gulf of Mexico.

I’d driven by The Spot multiple times over the years, and I’ll admit that the restaurant size seemed a bit intimidating. But it looked so lively, packed with people, and so bright and cheery that I knew I wanted to try it at some point. It looked like a cool place to sit and enjoy a meal or drink with a friend. Little did I know that when we got there, the restaurant had a long walk up that split between two venues (the entire space is actually made up of five venues!), and you could enter the bar area or the restaurant to order. We were there primarily for food, so we went to the restaurant.

Po-Boy, The Spot, Galveston
Po-Boy (The Spot, Galveston)

A misting fan will immediately greet you to cool off from spending hours laying out on the beach, which was a welcome surprise. Instead of ordering at the table, you simply grab a menu from the entrance, pick what you want, and order at the counter. Since the sun had gotten to us a bit, we weren’t looking to fill up on too much food, so we decided to split some things instead of ordering too much. We decided on their “Uncle Bill’s Famous” shrimp po-boy, a side of fried pickles, and a piña colada. You can order drinks from the bar, and they’ll bring them over with your food!

They’ll bring the food to you wherever you sit, so we decided to sit upstairs near the balcony as close as we could, but because the patio is obviously a popular area, it was already full. When we got our food, we were surprised at how large the portions were. Mind you; The Spot has excellent and affordable prices, so we didn’t expect all their servings to be so large! The sandwich was huge, the Piña Colada was gigantic, and there were so many fried pickles!

First, the po-boy. I’ll admit, this was the first one I’d ever had, but it made me a huge fan! The shrimp on the sandwich was freshly caught gulf shrimp and they were insanely big and plump. They were lightly battered and accompanied by lettuce, tomato, and a wonderful, light sauce.

Next, the fried pickles. I hadn’t expected to have so many of them, but they were flawlessly battered, and the ranch served with them complimented the pickles’ flavor without overpowering it. They were super addictive! My friend polished them off almost immediately.

Lastly, but definitely not least was the piña colada. It was absolutely divine! With a giant garnish of pineapple and cherry, it was just the refreshing pick-me-up we needed.

I saw many people order the burgers and huge mozzarella sticks, so I’ll have to try that next time I go to The Spot because they looked so good. I also want to try every single one of their drinks! I can’t wait to return.
