In the need for a caffeine boost? Need a place to post up with your laptop to work? Hungry for a delicious afternoon treat? Washington D.C., and its surrounding suburbs, are flooded with coffee houses and bakeries galore. Savory Traveler has six spots to add to your list of places to visit.

Bayou Bakery

Address: 1515 N. Courthouse Road, Arlington, VA 22201
Price: $
Attire: Casual
This is a casual eatery, where you order first at the counter and then find a seat – all first come, first served. Luckily, we had a plentiful choice so early in the morning. The dining room is decorated in all things reminiscent of New Orleans. An enormous fleur-de-lis hovers beneath brightly painted shutters; the flags of LSU, Tulane, the University of New Orleans, and Loyola University grace the back wall; and an array of down-home décor ranging from pelicans to voodoo signs can be found hanging in the bright space.

Compass Coffee

Address: 1401 I Street, Washington DC 20005
Price: $
Attire: Casual
Compass Coffee is a classic Washington D.C. shop with outposts throughout the district and a few spots in Maryland and Virginia. Founded in 2014 by two Marines, Compass Coffee is fueled by the philosophy that great coffee doesn’t have to be complicated, fancy or hard to pronounce. They believe that the best cup is the one that points you in the right direction at the start of your day, every day: just like a Compass. I could not agree more and I love how they deliver on this mission!

Eclairons

Address: 1737 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington VA 22209
Price: $
Attire: Casual
Are you mesmerized by cases of beautiful pastries? Swept away by handcrafted espresso drinks? If so, Eclairons in Arlington, Virginia is the coffee shop and bakery for you! This café feels like a European eatery with top notch service and incredible eats, just one metro stop from Washington, DC proper.

Fresh Baguette

Address: 1101 King Street, Alexandria, VA 22314
Price: $
Attire: Casual
Since moving back to the U.S. from Europe, I have been on the hunt for the perfect French croissant in the D.C. area. When I heard that local bakery Fresh Baguette was opening their new location in Alexandria and that they were a French bakery, with their equipment and techniques imported from the motherland of croissants, I knew this one was a must-try. With a hopeful stomach, I found myself waiting in line in freezing weather outside Fresh Baguette on opening day at 6 a.m.

Simona Cafe

Address: 2507 Franklin Rd, Arlington, VA 22201
Price: $
Attire: Casual
A brand-new café in Arlington, Virginia right outside of Washington, DC just opened this year and is a delightful spot for your morning cup of coffee, a third space to work in, or a new happy hour patio spot. Simona Café is the cozy cafe of my dreams, located a few blocks from the Court House or Clarendon Metro stops.
