Reviewing 94th Aero Squadron: A unique aviation-themed dining experience facing the Miami International Airport.
I absolutely love going to the 94th Aero Squadron, and it’s a fun place to bring family and friends. It is rich in history. The name is taken from one of the first fighter squadrons to take to the air in World War One. The group included such famous pilots as Eddie Rickenbacker and Frenchman Raoul Lufbery. Before you go, it’s worth looking on their website for a bit more of their history because once you get there, you’ll be tempted to play tourist and explore their grounds. 94th Aero Squadron is very Instagramable, and I’ve seen people climbing into planes and military transport vehicles and posing around the lake and in front of the airport. Inside are collections of various memorabilia. The grounds are fairly large, and on the night we visited, there were two weddings taking place, one inside and one outside.
Here is a tip that you must remember: make reservations and be sure to ask for a table next to the windows facing the airport. You definitely want to do some airport watching from your table at 94th Aero Squadron. You’ll have the perfect front-row seat to view takeoffs and landings. No matter where you sit, by each table, you’ll see a headset. Put them on, and you’ll be listening to the air traffic controllers at Pullman Miami Airport. How cool is that?
I’ve been coming to 94th Aero Squadron for years and consistently enjoy a great meal. I usually go for a dish with some type of fish, but this time I wanted some beef, so ordered the steak and lobster. My husband ordered the 20 oz. bone-in cowboy ribeye.
I felt a bit excited when the meals arrived, as they looked so good. We both ordered baked potatoes, and the server prepped them at our table, scooping on butter, sour cream, and chives in our direction. My lobster tail was a nice size; I believe it was 7 oz., and lightly seasoned with paprika. Butter and lemon were served on the side. I was born in Maine but can definitely indulge in some Florida lobster when it’s properly cooked. My lobster was perfect—soft and tender, with plenty of drawn butter to add to the decadence. My grilled aromas from the filet mignon were heavenly, and it was also topped with freshly melted butter. Despite the lobster and filet, I ate every last bit of the sautéed vegetables, though I guiltily knew they didn’t make up for all the butter I was consuming. YOLO, right? I tried a bite of that whopping cowboy steak, and it was decidedly as flavorful as you’d expect to find with any good ribeye.
94th Aero Squadron’s signature dessert that night was a homey and delicious-sounding apple walnut cake with cinnamon ice cream. Any and all chocolate lava cakes almost always lure me, but tonight I saw a crème brûlée go past for another table, so I made a hasty decision to order the same. The first spoonful confirmed that the brown sugar coating was warm yet crunchy on the outside, and the custard inside was cool and so smooth that it practically melted away on my tongue. Alas, it’s been years since I’ve had the sugar burnished at tableside, but maybe that practice is safer in the kitchen. Anyway, it certainly didn’t deter us from finishing every bite. I got the big raspberry, and my husband got the whipped cream. Luckily we are compatible in our dessert compromises. Next time we dine at 94th Aero Squadron, we’ll be sure to try that signature apple walnut cake.
