Reviewing Fountain Coffee Room: Serving Hollywood stars since 1949, grab a coffee and a celebrity sighting only at the Beverly Hills Hotel.
Fountain Coffee Room is an iconic spot that has been on my bucket list for quite some time, and let me tell you, I was not let down! Fountain Coffee Room is a “1950s-style counter service” coffee shop where Marilyn Monroe was “romanced,” and Guns N’ Roses were signed! Upon entering the Beverly Hills Hotel, every space was decorated with pink Christmas decor to match the pink coloring of the hotel. It was so festive– from the life-size nutcrackers at the entrance to the huge Christmas tree in the lobby. My grandmother, mother, and I only had to wait for about five minutes before a spot opened up at the back end of the counter. There were several cute puppies dining too! We could tell that most of the diners were regulars of Fountain Coffee Room as they were greeted by the employees and asked if they wanted their regular or to switch things up. This familial greeting matched the movie set vibe of the place and contributed to its “homey” feel.
We started with drinks– I got an iced latte, my mom got hot coffee, and my grandmother had an iced tea. My iced latte was stronger than I am used to as it did not have any syrup or sweetener, but I felt very prestigious drinking it, so I refused to add any sugar to it in fear of ruining the classic taste. My mom were also pleased with their drinks.
We then ordered some food– I ordered the salmon benedict with a side of hash browns, my mom got the silver dollar pancakes, and my grandmother ordered a grilled cheese and added ham to it with a side of potato salad. Fountain Coffee Room is well-known for its silver dollar pancakes, so I was eager to try some of my mom’s order. My salmon benedict was delicious! The English muffin was loaded with fresh lox and topped with a perfectly poached egg covered in a Hollandaise sauce bursting with lemon and mustard. The hash browns were prepared in a very traditional manner and reminded me of how my grandparents used to make them for me when I was little, which was nostalgic and matched perfectly with the feel the diner hopes to share with their customers. The silver dollar pancakes were served with three butter balls and two strawberries, but the Beverly Hills Hotel syrup is what completes the dish! The syrup is the perfect blend of sweet and savory in a bottle; there are truly no words that can describe how good it tastes– especially on top of the delicious pancakes! And lastly, the grilled cheese with added ham served with a side of potato salad was the ideal diner sandwich.
The sourdough bread was perfectly toasted, and the way they cut the sandwich made the presentation unique from a typical grilled cheese sandwich. My grandmother really enjoyed it! All in all, the three of us were very pleased with what we ordered, and we even had some leftovers to enjoy the meal all over again later that afternoon.
The staff at Fountain Coffee Room was delightful and personable with customers. As I mentioned earlier, most of the diners were regulars, so they had an established relationship with the staff. The ambiance of Fountain Coffee Room definitely has the “old Hollywood” feel and makes you curious about who you may be dining next to. I would love to go back to try more of the menu. The signature juices, the tuna melt, and the breakfast burrito are all alluring. And a re-order of the silver dollar pancakes is a must because they were oh-so-delicious! Additionally, they are known for having really good desserts as well, so I may have to stop in for a mid-day pick-me-up treat!
