Reviewing Sophia Steak: Your neighborhood steakhouse plating impeccably sourced and sustainably raised beef in Wilmette.
Hugging the shores of Lake Michigan in the northern suburbs of Chicago is the bustling town of Wilmette, Illinois. This historic town was settled by Antoine and Archange Ouilmette in the nineteenth century, and Sophia was one of their daughters.
Opened in 2020, Sophia Steak is a neighborhood steakhouse that reaches for the stars, serving steak and more in a friendly, welcoming ambiance. The best part is you get to enjoy a truly gourmet dining experience without having to drive into the city.
We started with the beet and arugula salad, which was packed with several kinds of beets, oranges, goat cheese, and walnuts. Along with their homemade rolls, we were off to a great dinner. Other starters include crispy lobster and shishitos (chili peppers), truffle parmesan fries, and meatballs Pomodoro.
Of course, steak is king here and Sophia Steak does it best. For our entrées, I chose the Kansas City Strip on the bone, and it was cooked to perfection, arriving hot and sizzling. We added steamed garlic spinach and white cheddar gratin as our sides, which was enough for the two of us.
Sophia Steak specializes in steaks and offers 10 different cuts with a range of enhancements. The crème de la crème is Steak for Two, which features a choice of 32 ounces of dry-aged Porterhouse or 34 ounces of Tomahawk Ribeye. Guests can choose two salads from Caesar, wedge, or super green, as well as two additional sides and one luscious dessert. This is a meal fit for a king and queen!
Other fine steaks include Prime New York Strip, Tomahawk Ribeye, and Black Angus Filet. Some enhancements are rich and savory maitre d’ butter, blue cheese butter, and béarnaise sauce.
Sophia Steak also serves sandwiches for a more casual meal and main dishes like roasted chicken with maple-glazed carrot, miso-glazed salmon, and braised short ribs.
Don’t forget to leave room for dessert. Their signature dessert is Sophia’s Butterscotch Sundae made with homemade vanilla ice cream, a blondie brownie, candied peanuts, and a butterscotch sauce. We opted for the carrot cake comprised of cream cheese frosting, walnuts, and a cinnamon anglaise. Other decadent choices include Oreo cheesecake and warm apple crisp.
Our server told us all the breads, sauces, and desserts are made daily in-house.
Sophia Steak also features a few weekend specials. On Friday night, you can enjoy the fresh Dover sole. On Saturday night, devour the savory Prime Rib, and on Sunday night, dig into fried chicken, which comes with house hot sauce, cornbread, and a side dish.
Wine drinkers will appreciate their extensive wine list from their wine cellar offering everything from sweet and European to sherry and Madeira. Specialty cocktails like the Sophia G-T and Ouillette Old Fashioned live up to their names.
Bold coffee comes from a local Chicago purveyor, Big Shoulders Coffee, which was recently named the Illinois winner for “The Best Coffee in Every State.”
Their indoor-outdoor patio allows you to dine outside or simply relax and enjoy the gentle breezes. They even have complimentary valet!
