Reviewing Taste of Nigeria: Authentic Nigerian food in Houston.
Taste of Nigeria is a restaurant in Houston that specializes in Nigerian cuisine. It opened its doors in 2018 and is well known among those who love this particular cuisine. The food here is authentic, very aromatic, and well-balanced in food groups. Orders vary in both spice and grease levels, so you can order to match your preferences. The dishes here are large for reasonable prices. This restaurant is open every day except Mondays. The owners make it a priority to serve food that truly fits the title of the restaurant.
Taste of Nigeria has a modest look to it from the outside. However, the restaurant sign is rather noticeable with its rich brown color and fancy gold letters. Once you walk in, you will notice that it has a modern interior with a trendy style to it. There are some artistic designs throughout the restaurant and customers can feel comfortable enjoying a hearty, flavorful meal. The establishment is certainly presentable, but their food and drinks are what shines most.
I ordered stewed chicken with jollof rice during my last visit here. It was absolutely delicious, extraordinarily rich with spices, and perfectly balanced in flavors. The meal I ordered was nicely balanced in protein, carbs, veggies, and fruit. The chicken was juicy and tender with an oily red sauce similar to buffalo wings in texture. The sauce on the chicken was spicy, but not too hot. The jollof rice was doughy, buttery, and had a texture like Spanish rice. The taste of this rice was smoky and savory. It had an addictive flavor to it that was complementary to the chicken. The turnip greens were juicy with a subtle spice that made them less earthy and a refreshing side to the salty meal. The sliced bananas were soft and sweet like a dessert. This overall dish was large and filling for about fifteen dollars.
The service was efficient and organized. The server I had was welcoming and genuinely attentive. The way servers cover the tables and check on customers is done with class, but not invasively. The managers were constantly checking on orders and spoke to employees while customers sat. The staff at this restaurant was highly informative on questions about dishes, flavor preferences, and prices for certain order combinations. In my experience here, every customer receives the same outstanding service. The food orders always come out fresh without too long of a wait. In terms of timing, freshness, and consistency, Taste of Nigeria has a superb system of customer service for both dine-in and takeout.
